60 homes evacuated after grenades and chemicals found in Suffolk house

More than 60 homes were evacuated after two military grenades and unidentified chemicals were seized from a home in Suffolk.

A bomb disposal team was called to the scene in Lowestoft on Sunday afternoon and families living nearby were ordered to leave.

Police made the discovery as part of a planned arrest in Normanshurst Close.

A spokesperson from Suffolk Constabulary said: "On arrival at the premises, police conducted a search of the property and recovered a quantity of unidentified chemicals and two military grenades inside the premises."

A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and is being held by police.

Most residents have been allowed to return to their homes, but a police cordon remains around the property where the items were discovered and three neighbouring houses.
