Baby dies and woman in critical condition after car collides with lorry in Wales

A baby has died and a woman is in a life-threatening condition in hospital after a car collided with a HGV in North Wales on Sunday afternoon.

The collision between a Ford Mondeo and a lorry happened on the A55 eastbound at Gwalchmai on Anglesey.

North Wales Police says it was called just after 2.05pm on Sunday and attended with other emergency services.

Shortly after leaving the scene of the crash, a 21-month-old boy died, the said.

A woman who was in the passenger seat was taken to hospital in Bangor, and later transferred to a unit in Stoke, where she remains in a critical condition.

A third person, the male driver, was uninjured in the collision.

The road remained closed for several hours as the investigation into the crash was carried out, before reopening shortly before 9pm.

Inspector Gareth Jones of the Roads Policing Unit said: "Sadly this is being investigated as a fatal road traffic collision and our heartfelt sympathies remain with the baby boy's family at this incredibly difficult time.

"The investigation is currently under way and we are appealing to anybody who may have witnessed the collision, or who may have seen either vehicle shortly before 2pm to contact us."
