Boris Johnson has revealed the last time he cried was over a stolen bike.

The former foreign secretary said he "very, very recently" emerged from parliament to find his beloved two-wheeler, given to him by Olympic cyclist Chris Boardman, had disappeared.

Mr Johnson said he "shed a tear" on discovering the bike that had been with him throughout his eight years as London mayor in City Hall had been stolen.

"It was never nicked in all my time in the city, I rode it everywhere," he told a debate hosted by The Sun.

"Barely had Sadiq Khan's reign begun and... it was nicked."

His rival in the Tory leadership race Jeremy Hunt asked: "Did you actually cry?"

"I became mildly lachrymose," Mr Johnson recalled.

Mr Hunt said he would only answer yes/no to questions during the quick-fire grilling round in the last head-to-head debate of the Tory leadership campaign.

Both candidates did rule out accepting a hypothetical concession from Brussels to the Brexit deal.

They pledged to reject any attempt by the EU to put a time limit on the Irish backstop - the insurance policy to prevent a hard border reforming on the island of Ireland.

The next Tory leader will be announced next Tuesday and take over from Theresa May on Wednesday, after she takes her final prime minister's questions in parliament.
