An official investigation is to be launched into Boris Johnson's 拢15,000 post-election holiday to the Caribbean, reports have said.

The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards Kathryn Stone is said to be pursuing the inquiry following conflicting reports about where the donation for the winter break came from, according to The Observer.

He could face a penalty if found to have broken the MPs' code of conduct after a review of the evidence from the Committee on Standards.

It comes after Mr Johnson cited businessman David Ross in the register of MPs' interests as the provider of the private accommodation - valued at £15,000 - despite a spokesperson for Mr Ross later saying no such money was handed over.

The same spokesperson for the Conservative Party donor later clarified it was a "benefit in kind" to the prime minister and his now-fiance Carrie Symonds.

Amid the confusion, the Labour Party called for a probe last month into how the prime minister came to have a stay at the pricey villa in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Shadow Cabinet Office minister Jon Trickett highlighted in a letter to Ms Stone that the code of conduct "requires members to provide the name of the person or organisation that actually funded a donation".

He added: "The evidence now suggests it was not David Ross. The entry made by the prime minister therefore appears to be incorrect."

The five-figure villa on the island of Mustique served as a celebratory break for Mr Johnson and Ms Symonds after the Conservative party won its first election landslide since the 1980s.

Mr Johnson, who recently confirmed his engagement to Ms Symonds and revealed the two are expecting a baby, was criticised for not bringing his holiday to an earlier end in the wake of the US killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in January.

Downing Street has declined to comment.
