Police have launched a murder inquiry after a 30-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Bristol on Tuesday.

The victim suffered life-threatening injuries after an altercation is believed to have taken place at the junction of Ashley Road and Grosvenor Road, in the St Paul's inner suburb.

He was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary but, despite the best efforts of medics, could not be saved.

It is the third murder investigation to be launched in east Bristol in the past two months - and the third killing in the area of St Paul's within the last year, Avon and Somerset Police said.

Detectives from the force's Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) have arrested a 43-year-old man on suspicion of murder. He has been remanded in custody.

A police cordon is in place in both Ashley Road and Grosvenor Road.

Bristol Commander Mark Runacres offered "heartfelt condolences" to the victim's family, who are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.

'Negative light'

"We do believe there is no wider risk to the public as a result of this incident, however we recognise the concern recent events are causing and the negative light this is shining on our city," Mr Runacres said.

He insisted the force would "not shy away from taking every necessary step to prevent serious violence".

"The impact and trauma the community is feeling is not underestimated and we are working very closely with our partners to make sure appropriate support is available," he added.

"The community can expect to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days while forensic searches, CCTV trawls and witness statements are taken."

Mr Runacres said that extra high-visibility patrols would be carried out in the area over the coming days and for people with any concerns to approach an officer.

Anyone with information or dashcam/CCTV footage has also been asked to get in touch with the force.
