Cardiff Half Marathon: Organisers 'devastated' after runner dies

The runner has not been identified but organisers say they died at hospital soon after taking part in the event.

A runner has died at the Cardiff Half Marathon, the race's organisers have said.

Run 4 Wales chief executive Matt Newman said: "Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the runner who tragically passed away after taking part at the event.

"The emergency services reacted to this terrible situation with great speed and professionalism.

"Everyone connected with the race is devastated."

No details were given about the runner.

They were tended to by an emergency medical team before being taken to University Hospital of Wales, where they died.

According to local media, a record 27,500 runners competed in the Sunday morning event.

Two runners died in last year's race - Ben McDonald, 25, from Cardiff, and Dean Fletcher, 32, from Exeter.

The men went into cardiac arrest and died soon after crossing the finish line.
