An earthquake that struck a summer holiday hotspot triggered a noise like a "sonic boom" and caused homes to shake, residents have reported.

The tremor hit about five miles southwest of Falmouth in west Cornwall.

According to the British Geological Survey (BGS), it had a magnitude of 2.2.

A seismic alert was issued following the quake, which happened at around 5pm on Thursday.

One householder reported their windows shaking after a "loud bang from beneath".

One person who felt the ground move wrote on Twitter: "Down in West Cornwall and seems we just had an earthquake! Either that or a sonic boom/explosion of some kind."

Seismologists are asking people who felt the quake to fill out a questionnaire to help them better understand the event.

There are about 15 tremors of this size or greater a year in the UK, the BGS said.
