A British woman is understood to have died in Indonesia after contracting coronavirus.

Indonesian authorities said the 53-year-old was the first recorded death from the virus in the country, which has 26 other confirmed cases.

A health ministry official said the woman had already been in a critical condition when she was admitted to hospital.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Indonesia and are in contact with local authorities. Our sympathies and thoughts are with her family at this difficult time."

Yesterday, Indonesia reported eight new cases, bringing the total there to 27. Authorities said the ages of the new patients ranged from 33 to 73.

An official said two were foreigners and that five of the new cases had been imported, and that two were traced to an earlier cluster.
