A statement from the president's office said: "This diagnosis was made following a PCR test performed at the onset of the first symptoms."

Mr Macron's positive result came following his attendance at an EU 27 summit last week in Brussels with most of the bloc's leaders.

A French official said that due to the timing of the president's symptoms, it is likely he caught the virus on the trip.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel tested negative for the coronavirus following the summit, her government said.

While Mr Macron had adopted socially distanced greetings earlier in the pandemic, he was seen on Monday shaking hands with Mr Gurria, a move branded an "unfortunate" mistake by the Elysee.

Mr Macron has received well wishes from Boris Johnson and Donald Trump - both of whom had the coronavirus.

Prime Minister Jean Castex will self-isolate, as will political party chiefs from the lower house after they had lunch with Mr Macron earlier this week.
