A 16-year-old moped rider who stabbed a stranger in the back several times in an unprovoked attack has been jailed for eight years.

Judge Samantha Leigh at Basildon Crown Court lifted reporting restrictions so attacker Archie Maile can be identified despite being under 18 years of age and said he poses a "significant risk to members of the public".

Maile was riding his moped in Russell Gardens in Wickford, Essex, on 12 May when he stopped to shout at the victim and then produced a knife.

The boy tried to escape but tripped and Maile stabbed him while he lay on the ground.

Essex Police said the victim, who did not know his attacker, suffered two "significant wounds" including a punctured lung.

Two off-duty nurses helped to save the teenager, who could have died without their intervention, the force said.

In an impact statement, the victim described his fear of leaving the house following the attack and added: "There is no reason he can ever justify what he did to me… I hope that he never has the opportunity to hurt anyone else again."

Maile, from Wickford, fled the scene and was detained hours later on 13 May by police who seized a pair of blood-stained jogging bottoms during the arrest, which were proved to be linked to the stabbing.

He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and possessing a blade in a public place at a July court hearing, and was sentenced for the attack on Monday.

Detective Constable Robert Lewis, of Basildon CID, said: "This was a brutal attack on a helpless victim, who could have lost his life as a result.

"Without the help of two off-duty nurses, and the quick-thinking of his friends at the time of the incident, we could be telling a very different story today.

"Despite being 16, Maile is not a child - he is a dangerous offender."

The force said it has been unable to trace the two off-duty nurses who rushed to the victim's aid and would like to thank them.
