Donald Trump has offered a rare compliment to Theresa May, calling her "tough" after she said she would resign to get her Brexit deal through.
Addressing reporters in the White House, Mr Trump said: "She's a very nice lady. She's a friend of mine.
"I hope she does well. I hope the Brexit movement and everything happening there goes very well.
"But, Theresa May is a very good woman. And, I'll tell you what, she's strong, she's tough, and she's in there fighting."
Mrs May told her MPs on Wednesday night that she would quit if her deal got over the line in time for an orderly exit from the EU on 22 May.
But it does not appear to have sealed the deal as the 10 DUP MPs on which her government relies still refuse to back the agreement as it stands.
Asked whether Boris Johnson would make a good successor, Mr Trump said: "I like Boris Johnson a lot.
"He's a friend of mine."
Mr Johnson is considered likely to be in the running in a new leadership contest, as he has previously not been shy about his ambitions for leadership.
Mr Trump's comments are something of a departure from his usual approach to Mrs May's Brexit negotiations.
Earlier this month, he said he could not believe "how badly" the Brexit negotiations were going.
He said: "I'm surprised at how badly it has all gone from a stand point of negotiations but I gave the prime minister my ideas of how to negotiate it, she didn't listen to that and that's fine but it could have been negotiated in a different manner, frankly.
"I hate to see everything being ripped apart now."
According to Mrs May, Mr Trump advised her to "sue the EU" and "not go into negotiations".
In November, he said that the PM's deal "sounds like a great deal for the EU" but could hinder trade between the US and UK.
The president was much more forthright on the eve of a visit to the UK last July.
Mr Trump said in a newspaper interview that the PM's agreement would "kill" hopes of any future trade deal between the two nations.
And he has been very kind to former foreign secretary Boris Johnson before too, calling him a "very talented guy" who "has got the right attitude to be a great prime minister".
