The political fall-out from this huge set of elections is becoming clear, with results now complete in Wales - but there are still results to be declared in England and Scotland.

The votes cast on May 6th for national parliaments, local councils, elected mayors and police and crime commissioners, will determine who controls the key levers of political power outside Westminster.

Ben Houchen also won re-election as the tory mayor of Tees Valley, substantially increasing his majority.

On Saturday Boris Johnson was able to secure the so-called 'hat-trick' by fending off Labour's attempt to win back the West Midlands mayoralty.

Tory incumbent Andy Street was able to beat Labour's Liam Byrne, winning 54% of the vote after second preference votes were counted.

The Conservatives have also made a number of notable gains in the the council election results so far declared in England - breaking the convention that a party in power, particuarly for as long as the current Conservative government, loses rather than gains seats in such contests.

The positives so far for Labour have been the results in Wales, where the party has won enough Senedd seats to have a working majority, and in Liverpool and Manchester where Steve Rotheram and Andy Burnham both comfortably won reelection as metro mayors.

Labour also gained the metro mayor positions in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and the West of England from the Conservatives.

Sadiq Khan is still likely to win reelection, but his team acknowledge it could be a close contest. Given opinion polls in March had indicated he could win in the first round by securing more than 50% of the vote.

One other race to lookahead to will be the race to become West Yorkshire mayor, which is likely to be announced on Sunday.

Labour's Tracey Brabin is expected to win the contest, but if she does she will need to resign her current position as an MP, meaning Sir Keir Starmer could in the coming months be facing another difficult by-election with the potential for another Tory gain.
