A middle-aged man lied in claiming he lost family members in the Grenfell Tower disaster to get compensation, a court has heard.
Anh Nhu Nguyen has been charged with two counts of fraud over allegations he made false claims.
The 52-year-old, of no fixed abode, received nearly £10,000 from charities and from Kensington and Chelsea Council.
He was also given a hotel room, clothing, food and electrical goods after presenting himself as a victim of the blaze at a relief centre.
At least 80 people are feared to have died in the Grenfell fire, with police warning they may not know the full death toll until the end of the year.
Nguyen, from Beckenham in southeast London, appeared at Westminister Magistrates' Court.
He did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody.
He is due to appear at Southwark Crown Court on July 28.
