An Irish woman has died along with her husband and teenage children in an apparent murder-suicide in Nevada.

The victims have been named as Joan Huber, 53, Adam Huber, 50, and their two sons Adam Huber, 17, and Michael Huber, 16, according to the Washoe County medical examiner's office.

All four died from gunshot wounds.

Their bodies were discovered at their home in Reno at about 11am on Wednesday.

Irish media reports say Mrs Huber was originally from Coolcuslaugh, County Kerry.

The teenage boys were students at Damonte Ranch High School, which described the deaths as a "domestic incident".

Grief counsellors are supporting students and staff at the school.

Three other students at the school have died in separate, unrelated incidents recently.

Police said they believe it to be an isolated incident and the rest of the community is not under threat.

Sergeant John Silver told the Reno Gazette Journal that police did not know what led up to the incident.

"We didn't have prior calls or anything like that," he said.

"We are still at the beginning stages. We need to determine exactly what happened.

"We're going to have to go through this whole house to make sure we cover all the bases and make sure our initial thoughts are accurate."

It is not clear whether a weapon was found at the property.
