Former FBI boss James Comey did not hold back as he broke his silence on Donald Trump in a revealing television interview.

Filmed ahead of the release of a book in which he likens the President to one of the mafia bosses he once took on, the ABC News interview sees Mr Comey describe the "slightly orange" US leader as "morally unfit" to serve.

Here are the stand-out moments from the interview:

:: A matter of values

"Truth matters, integrity matters," Mr Comey said. "Values matter. This President does not reflect the values of this country."

:: Trump 'morally unfit'

Mr Comey said: "I don't think he's medically unfit to be President. I think he's morally unfit to be President.

"A person who sees moral equivalence in Charlottesville, who talks about and treats women like they're pieces of meat, who lies constantly about matters big and small and insists the American people believe it, that person's not fit to be President of the United States, on moral grounds.

"The challenge of this President is that he will stain everyone around him."

:: First impressions

"He had impressively coiffed hair... it looks to be all his," he said. "His tie was too long, as it always is. He looked slightly orange up close with small white half moons under his eyes, which I assume are from tanning googles.

"I've never seen him laugh."

:: Comey on Attorney General

"My sense of (Attorney General Jeff Sessions)... was that he was over matched for the job... and that he was going to struggle in it."

:: Clinton probe 'competent and independent'

He said: "I knew this was a no-win situation, this case. If there were people who were secretly trying to protect Hillary Clinton, we didn't know about it.

"The FBI drove this investigation and we did it in a competent and independent way. I would bet my life on that."

Mr Comey was asked if the assumption Mrs Clinton would win the 2016 election was behind the decision to reveal the FBI was revisiting its investigation into her use of a private email server.

He replied: "I don't remember spelling it out, but it had to have been."

:: On Trump and Russia

"These are more words I never thought I'd utter about a President of the United States, but it's possible (the Russians have something on Trump)."

:: Trump obstruction of justice 'possible'

Mr Comey was asked if the President had obstructed justice by directing him to drop the investigation into Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser.

He said: "Possibly. I mean, it's certainly some evidence of obstruction of justice. It would depend... upon other things that reflected on his intent."

:: Mueller 'not on anybody's side'

He also spoke about special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election.

"I'm not going to talk about my contact with the special counsel," he said. "He's not on anybody's side. He does not care about anything except the truth.

"(Firing Mr Mueller) would, I hope, set off alarm bells that this is his most serious attack yet on the rule of law."

:: Comey on removing Trump

"I think impeaching and removing Donald Trump from office would let the American people off the hook and have something happen indirectly that I believe they're duty bound to do directly."

:: Videotape allegations

The former FBI chief also talked about a meeting in which he briefed Mr Trump about allegations Russia had a video of the future President having prostitutes urinate on each other in a Moscow hotel room.

He said: "He was very defensive and started to launch into...the list of people who had accused him of touching them improperly, sexual assault and how he hadn't done this, he hadn't done that.

"He...says he may want me to investigate it to prove that it didn't happen. And then he says something that distracted me - 'If there's even a one percent chance my wife thinks that's true, that's terrible'.

"So what kind of marriage to what kind of man does your wife think there's only a 99% chance you didn't do that?"
