Dutch police have shot dead a man on a street near the Netherlands' central bank after he brandished a firearm at them.

The man was killed after he "came at the agents with the weapon" behind the Nederlandsche Bank in Amsterdam on Wednesday at around 7.15pm.

He died of his injuries while one passer-by was wounded in the incident, police said in a statement.

Eyewitnesses said around 20 shots were fired in the gunfight, according to local television station AT5.

Amsterdam police spokesman Ruben Sprong said there is "no big signal of terror" from what happened.

He added: "But of course, everything is unclear. We are still looking into things."

Part of the street was cordoned off for the investigation into the killing.

Dennis Brandsma, a photographer, told De Telegraaf: "I heard a few bangs, together with my son. Then we immediately realised that it was not fireworks.

"I saw a man lying on the floor. There were agents around him."

No further details were immediately available.
