Some flights have been cancelled at Heathrow Airport following "technical issues" with departure boards and check-in systems.

Passengers reported they were forced to find temporary whiteboards to work out flight details.

And photos on social media showed blank electronic screens where there should have been gate numbers.

The situation at the airport was described on Twitter by one passenger as "utter chaos".

Jenny Nielsen tweeted pictures of whiteboards displaying handwritten flight numbers and destinations.

She said: "Computer systems down at Heathrow. No electronic tickets allowed, delays & no flight information on screens... Oh Blighty."

The west London airport said extra staff had been put on to help with directing people to their gates.

More on Heathrow Airport

A Heathrow spokesperson said: "We are continuing to experience technical issues which are currently being resolved.

"We have additional passenger ambassadors being deployed across our terminals both airside and landside to help direct our customers to their departure gates.

"We apologise for the disruption this is causing our passengers."

The airport later said the technical issue had been resolved and systems were returning to normal.
