Around 1.3 million children in England are set to benefit from Marcus Rashford's successful campaign to provide free school meal vouchers over the summer.

The England and Manchester United star has been widely praised for helping to secure food vouchers worth £15 a week for disadvantaged children outside of term time.

Data from the Department of Education shows 15.4% of pupils in England claimed free school meals in January 2019.

And last year the proportion of children claiming free school meals in England increased after falling for several years.

After pressure from Rashford, the government announced a one-off £120m fund on Tuesday which will benefit some 1.3 million children in England over the six-week summer period.

Across England's regions, Inner London and the North East had the biggest proportion of pupils who claimed free school meals.

Local authorities with the highest proportion of pupils claiming free school meals were Tower Hamlets in east London, Knowsley in Merseyside, Hackney in east London, Islington in north London and Newcastle upon Tyne.

Rashford has said he is now planning his next move to help struggling families.

The 22-year-old told Sky Sports News: "We have to make England what we want it to look like.

"My view on it is it's a generational thing. Generations change and people improve as humans should.

"I feel like now this generation that we're in, we're not afraid to stand up and be counted for and it's definitely a positive thing."
