Hurricane Franklin remnants could bring warm weather to UK as they 'buckle jet stream'

Hurricane Franklin is moving across the North Atlantic, pushing energy towards the jet stream and allowing high pressure to build across the UK. It could allow hotter air from the Mediterranean to move up.

Hurricane season on the other side of the Atlantic could affect the UK's weather into next week.聽

Bermuda was lashed by the outer bands of Hurricane Franklin, a category 2 storm, on Wednesday.

By the start of next week, Met Office modelling sees the storm pushing into the North Atlantic.

"That has consequences for our own weather," Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said.

"It's going to push some energy and some warmth towards the jet stream, which in turn buckles the jet stream ... allowing that high pressure to build across the UK."

Sky News meteorologist Chris England said the UK is set for a "mainly dry weekend, with south-westerly winds bringing warm and humid air up from mid-Atlantic".

The disruption to the jet stream is due to a low pressure system sitting between Greenland and Iceland over the next few days, he said.

"The remains of Hurricane Franklin look set to move to a similar position later next week, repeating the process.

"It's possible that the high pressure may move a little as ex-Franklin pushes up from the south-west, allowing some hotter air to move up from the Mediterranean, but if that happens it'll be fairly short-lived before the Atlantic flow returns."

He had a word of caution about forecasting the weather this far out: "When hurricanes and hurricane remnants are involved the forecasting becomes more problematic (owing to the relatively small scale of the storms and their intensity), so this is far from guaranteed."

The forecast for this weekend sees Saturday bringing warm sunny spells, after a chilly and, in places, foggy start.

It will be dry for most, with just a few showers likely in the South.

Sunday looks mainly fine too, but the far north may well see rain moving in.
