French National Front founder Jean-Marie Le Pen has accused his daughter of a "scandalous" betrayal after she suspended him from the far-right party she leads because of his anti-semitic comments.

The controversial politician also said he was "ashamed that the President of the National Front bears my name" and suggested she change it by getting married, as a bitter feud between the pair boiled over.

The latest clash comes after the party's executive committee, chaired by Marine Le Pen, suspended her father's membership and said it would strip him of his title of honorary chairman after he repeated his view that Nazi gas chambers were a mere "detail" of the Second World War.

He also defended Philippe Petain, the leader of the French wartime government that cooperated with Nazi Germany.

Le Pen, who refused to attend a party disciplinary committee over his remarks, has been a source of irritation to the National Front leadership ever since he turned over the presidency to his daughter in 2011.

She has campaigned to rid the party of its anti-Semitic image and position it as an anti-immigration Eurosceptic party which will appeal to voters in the run up to the 2017 presidential elections.

Mr Le Pen said: "I think it is about being deceitful and I must say that I am ashamed that the President of the National Front bears my name and I would like that she loses it as quickly as possible.

"She can do so by marrying her partner or maybe Mr Florian Philippot (Vice President of National Front) or someone else, but I don't want that the President of the National Front has the name of Le Pen.

"I don't recognise any links with someone who betrayed me in such a scandalous way."

Several senior National Front party members said Mr Le Pen's reaction justified the decision to suspend him.

The party's treasurer said: "Internal democracy functioned perfectly within the National Front and the decision is perfectly clear."
