Jeremy Corbyn mocked over England World Cup tweet quoting Bill Shankly

The Labour leader is ribbed for sharing a quote from Bill Shankly - a Scot - but his critics are accused of being unduly pedantic.

Ahead of the Three Lions' opening World Cup match against Tunisia, Jeremy Corbyn used Twitter to wish England luck in Russia.

The Labour leader shared an "inspirational message" from Bill Shankly, who he described as "one of our country's finest ever football managers".

Mr Corbyn, who is an Arsenal fan, tweeted: "As we prepare for England's first match in the #WorldCup, here's an inspirational message from one of our country's finest ever football managers.

"I wish our fans a safe tournament and the players the best of luck. Let's get a win."

However, Shankly is Scottish and not English.

Indeed the legendary manager, who led Liverpool to three league titles and two FA Cups during a storied stint at Anfield, once remarked about playing for Scotland: "It's fantastic. You look down at your dark blue shirt, and the wee lion looks up at you and says, 'Get out after the English...!'"

England v Scotland is the oldest international fixture in the world - with the Three Lions often referred to as the "Auld Enemy" by the Tartan Army.

Many Twitter users were quick to take Mr Corbyn to task for his post:

But some said those ribbing the Labour leader were being unduly pedantic, pointing out that Shankly made his name playing and managing in England:

England won 2-1 thanks to a brace from striker Harry Kane, with the winner coming in stoppage time.

Mr Corbyn tweeted after the game: "Great start to England's #WorldCup campaign.

"Fought right until the end and deserved the win. Bring on Panama. #ENGTUN"
