Jo Stevens: Labour's shadow culture secretary in hospital with COVID-19

The 54-year-old MP was said to have been "laid low" with symptoms of coronavirus at the end of December.

Labour's shadow culture secretary Jo Stevens is being treated in hospital for COVID-19.

A statement on the 54-year-old MP's Twitter account said: "Jo has asked us to let you know that she is being treated in hospital for Covid.

"Thanks for all your good wishes we will give an update when we can."

On New Year's Eve a spokesperson for Ms Stevens said she had been "laid low with COVID for a while".

Following the announcement that she was in hospital, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: "Get well soon Jo, a dear friend and colleague."

A number of other politicians also posted messages of support, including former chancellor Sajid Javid and the vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi who said: "Wishing you a speedy recovery Jo".

First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford said: "All of our thoughts and best wishes are with Jo for a speedy recovery.

Ms Stevens has been an MP since 2015 and was appointed shadow culture secretary by Sir Keir after backing his Labour leadership campaign.
