South Korean pop star and actress Sulli has been found dead at home, police have said.

The 25-year-old was found on Monday after her manager went to her home in Seongnam, south of the capital Seoul, as she was not responding to calls.

In a statement sent to reporters, SM Entertainment, the star's agency, said her death was "very hard to believe and sorrowful".

Kim Seong-tae, an official from the Seongnam Sujeong Police Department, said there were no signs of foul play and that police did not find a suicide note.

"The investigation is ongoing and we won't make presumptions about the cause of death," the officer said, adding that security camera footage at the home showed no signs of an intrusion.

Sulli, whose real name is Choi Jin-ri, began her singing career in 2009 as a member of the girl band f(x), before leaving the group in 2015 and going on to act in TV dramas and films.

The star had six million Instagram followers and was known for being outspoken on feminism and other issues - a rare thing among female entertainers in deeply conservative South Korea.

She recently appeared in a TV show and spoke out against the online backlash she received over her lifestyle.
