Majorca: Details of victims emerge after four killed in building collapse

A further 16 people were injured after the first floor of a two-storey beach club in Palma collapsed.

Three women and a man have died after a beach club partially collapsed in Majorca.

Two German women aged 20 and 30, a 23-year-old Spanish woman who was working as a waitress and a Senegalese man aged 44 died after the first floor of the two-storey Medusa Beach Club in Palma collapsed on Thursday, Sky News has been told.

A further 16 people were injured in the incident which occurred at 8.30pm local time, seven of whom were "very seriously" injured and nine were seriously injured, emergency services said yesterday.

A spokesperson for the Palma City Council said all those injured were Dutch tourists.

Firefighters were seen removing people from the building, some were taken out on stretchers as ambulances waited outside.

A spokesperson for German's Foreign Ministry said its consulate in Mallorca was in close contact with authorities.

"The situation on the ground is still partly unclear," the spokesperson said. "At this point in time, we unfortunately have to assume that German nationals are among the dead and injured."

Raul Pursnami, owner of a clothes shop next to the beach club, told El Pais that he heard a loud noise before the collapse.

He said everything happened very quickly while people were eating and others were dancing.

Palma, Majorca's capital, is an area popular with tourists.

The beach club had been promoting events for Saturday 25 May to launch the 2024 season, according to its social media sites.

The UK's Foreign Office said it was "aware" of the incident, adding that there were "currently no reports of British nationals having been informed".

Yesterday, Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez sent his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished for a "speedy recovery".

He said he was monitoring the situation closely and his government would be ready to deploy "all the means and personnel that are necessary".

Three days of mourning has been declared by Palma City Council, according to local media reports.
