A man has been charged with three counts of attempted murder after a stabbing incident at a London hospital.

Matteo Bottarelli, 43, is also charged with two counts of threatening violence with a bladed article in a public place, the Metropolitan Police said.

Armed officers were called to Central Middlesex Hospital on Wednesday to reports that two people had been stabbed.

Officers found two men - both believed to be in their 40s - with stab injuries. They are thought to have been attacked with a mattock, a tool similar to a pickaxe.

Both are being treated in hospital, with one suffering life-changing injuries, police said.

Following the suspect's arrest, police further arrested him on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, affray and a third count of attempted murder.

The victim in this count did not suffer any injuries, police said.

The suspect was also taken to hospital with suspected self-inflicted injuries.

Bottarelli, of Central Way, northwest London, is due to appear at Willesden Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Police said the incident was not being treated as terror related.
