Why you can trust Sky News

Ex-USA gymnast Aly Raisman has posed naked to encourage women to "trust yourself".

Raisman was one of more than 100 victims of former USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who was jailed last month for up to 175 years for sexually abusing young gymnasts.

She posted on Instagram the photo, which showed her with words written on her body, including "fierce", "trust yourself", "survivor" and "women do not have to be modest to be respected".

She wrote: "Women do not have to be modest to be respected.

"Live for you.

"Everyone should feel comfortable expressing themselves however makes them happy."

Raisman, part of the gold-winning US women's team at the 2016 Rio Games, was one of those who spoke at Nassar's sentencing in Ingham County, Michigan.

She told the disgraced 54-year-old in court: "The tables have turned. We are here. We have our voices, and we are not going anywhere.

"You are so sick.

"I can't even comprehend how angry I feel when I think of you.

"You took advantage of our passions and our dreams."

But she added: "You have not taken gymnastics away from me.

"I love this sport, and that love is stronger than the evil that resides in you, in those who enabled you to hurt many people."

Her photo, part of a Sports Illustrated campaign, received a mixture of responses, with many praising her and others wondering why she needed to pose naked to share her message.

One wrote she was "a true inspiration and such a positive role model for women and girls", while another said: "posing nude is not the way to get respect".

The photo shoot also featured models including Hunter McGrady, Ebonee Davis and Robyn Lawley.
