Window cleaners were left dangling on a New York high-rise on Monday, after the platform they were using to scale the building collapsed.

A rescue mission was mounted to save the two men, who were clinging on to the broken scaffolding more than 61m (200ft) in the air.

Aerial footage shows the platform hanging by one attachment as two workers are precariously positioned on top of it.

Fire crews were called at around 9.10am local time to the Brookfield Place complex in Lower Manhattan, and got rescue lines out to the workers.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) had to secure the rigging so that the window cleaners could be brought into the building safely.

The FDNY said both men, who had been wearing harnesses, declined medical assessments.

Speaking to NBC, FDNY lieutenant John Tobin said: "We were able to pull those two scaffold workers in right where they are instead of putting them in further jeopardy by pulling them further up the building."
