Footage has emerged of the moment a man armed with a hammer attacked police outside Notre Dame cathedral in Paris before being shot.

The film shows the attacker running up behind the three patrolling officers and then launching himself into the air to deliver a double-handed strike on one of the men, knocking him to the floor.

The assailant then took another swing at the wounded officer at which point he was and fell to the ground.

The 40-year-old Algerian student, who was also carrying knives and yelled "this is for Syria" during the attack, remains in hospital with gunshot wounds.

He has been named as Farid Ikken by sources close to the investigation.

A video seized during in the northwest Paris suburb of Cergy showed him pledging allegiance to Islamic State.

The authorities said he not previously "shown any signs of radicalisation".

The 22-year-old officer was only slightly injured in the attack.

France has been on high alert in the wake of a string of terror attacks, which have claimed the lives of more than 230 people.

Meanwhile, singer Ariana Grande resumed her European tour in the French capital on Wednesday night following the suicide bombing at the end of her concert in Manchester that killed 22 people.

Security was tight outside Paris' AccorHotels Arena, with road closures, bag searches, dog patrols and a heavy police presence.

The 23-year-old star was in Manchester on Sunday to host in aid of the victims.
