A nursery in Kent has been shut down over "serious safeguarding concerns" following a child's death.

The infant suffered a medical emergency on 23 September at Jelly Beans Day Nursery in Ashford and later died.

Further details have not yet been disclosed.

Schools watchdog Ofsted said it has suspended the daycare centre's registration "due to serious safeguarding concerns" for six weeks while an investigation takes place.

The nursery will remain closed during that time.

In a statement, Jelly Beans Day Nursery said: "We have today been notified that the child who was subject to this medical incident has tragically died.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the family who are in everyone's thoughts."

It added: "We have been cooperating fully with all relevant authorities and will continue to do so."

This is not the first medical incident at Jelly Beans Day Nursery.

Five years ago a toddler there was given an overdose of prescription medication, leading Ofsted to downgrade the childcare provider from "good" to "inadequate".

A further inspection in 2018 restored its "good" rating.
