Police officers were left stunned after they stopped a car on the motorway being driven on a metal wheel rim.
Officers said the driver of the badly damaged Citroen believed it was "acceptable" to be driven on the M60 Manchester Outer Ring Road despite the vehicle having seen better days.
The red car, which police assured was "not involved in an accident today", had severely damaged bodywork and was missing a headlight and a wing mirror - along with its wrecked wheel.
Police stopped the driver after receiving "numerous" reports from concerned motorists.
Posting on Twitter, North West Motorway Police said the driver was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after giving a positive roadside sample.
They said patrols "couldn't believe it once we got the vehicle stopped" and added: "This is not a wind-up. Vehicle in question has not been involved in an accident today.
"Driver under the influence of drugs has entered the network thinking this is acceptable."
