A Bill will be published in days, as the PM is warned: "Scotland didn't choose to be in this situation - your party put us here."

Nicola Sturgeon has revealed plans for a second independence referendum so Scotland can reconsider the issue in light of the Brexit vote and "do so before the UK leaves the EU".

Scotland's First Minister said the Scottish Government would be publishing an Independence Referendum Bill next week for consultation.

She announced the move - which she argued was necessary - to delegates at the SNP conference in Glasgow on Thursday.

Ms Sturgeon warned Prime Minister Theresa May: "If you think for one single second that I'm not serious about doing what it takes to protect Scotland's interests, then think again.

"If you can't - or won't - allow us to protect our interests within the UK, then Scotland will have the right to decide, afresh, if it wants to take a different path."

Almost two-thirds (62%) of Scots voted to remain part of the European Union in the 23 June EU vote.

More on Brexit

The SNP leader has put herself by vowing to lead an all-party fight against Brexit.

Ms Sturgeon told the conference: "I am determined that Scotland will have the ability to reconsider the question of independence - and to do so before the UK leaves the EU - if that is necessary to protect our country's interests.

"So I can confirm today that the Independence Referendum Bill will be published for consultation next week."

Ms Sturgeon's declaration of war on Brexit comes after the Scottish Secretary, David Mundell, announced the SNP leader and the Prime Minister will have their first Brexit showdown on 24 October.

Mr Mundell told MPs the first meeting of the Joint Ministerial Committee to discuss Brexit, involving the UK Government and the three devolved administrations, would take place in 12 days' time in Downing Street.
