Analysis: Israel-Hamas war 'intensifying' now fighting with Iran is over

Fighting in Gaza between Israel and Hamas is "intensifying" now the 12-day war between Israel and Iran is over, our correspondent Tom Cheshire has said.

Reporting from Jerusalem, he said: "We actually went down to the border between Israel and Gaza in the south of the country just this morning... you can see from the AG百家乐在线官网line that this war is intensifying."

Speaking to presenter Samantha Washington, Cheshire added: "Israel Defence Forces say that with the conclusion of the Iran-Israel 12-day war, they were refocusing on Gaza, trying to defeat Hamas.

"IDF sources are telling me it's basically all-out guerrilla warfare at this stage.

"And also bearing in mind that the IDF troops have been killed in recent days down there."

War of words breaks out as diplomacy needed

Cheshire also touched on the latest from Iran, where a "post-conflict landscape" is emerging.

Despite the need for a diplomatic solution, he said a rather undiplomatic war of words had broken out instead.

Emirates Airlines extends cancellations of all flights to and from Tehran

Emirates Airlines has extended its cancellation of all flights to and from Tehran until Friday.

The carrier cited the "regional situation".

It added: "Customers connecting through Dubai with final destinations in Iran will not be accepted for travel at their point of origin until further notice."

The Dubai-based airline said its operations in Baghdad would recommence on Tuesday, and in Basra on Wednesday.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our customers. We continue to closely monitor developments. The safety of our passengers, employees and operations will always be our top priority," Emirates said.

Trump disputes reports US weighing up $30bn civilian deal for Iran

Donald Trump has claimed reports that he was weighing up helping Iran access as much as $30bn (拢21.9bn) to build a civilian-energy-producing nuclear programme "fake news".

The US president took issue with reports that emerged on CNN on Thursday and our US partner NBC News on Friday.

It was said that the Trump administration had explored economic incentives for Iran in return for Tehran halting its uranium enrichment.

A nuclear Middle East

Since April, Iran and the US have held indirect talks aimed at finding a new diplomatic solution regarding Iran's nuclear programme.

However, Israel interrupted these talks with strikes on Iran, claiming it was nearing a nuclear weapon.

Contention over whether Tehran was nearing a nuclear bomb or not - something it claims isn't true - was a key factor in the 12-day war.

Israel is widely believed to have nuclear weapons and said its war against Iran aimed to prevent Tehran from developing its own.

Iran is a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, while Israel is not.

The UN nuclear watchdog, which carries out inspections in Iran, has said it has "no credible indication" of an active, coordinated weapons programme in Iran.

What next?

While the US is seemingly not going ahead with this reported plan, it raises the question of what is next for Iran's nuclear programme?

While fighting has been halted for now, it isn't clear how a path forward is forged and whether a lasting peace can be achieved.

At least 34 killed in Gaza by Israeli strikes, health officials say

At least 34 people have been killed across Gaza by Israeli strikes, health staff have told the Associated Press news agency.

The strikes began late Friday and continued into Saturday morning.

Among those killed were 12 people at the Palestine Stadium in Gaza City, which was sheltering displaced people.

A further eight people were living in apartments according to staff at the Shifa hospital where the bodies were brought.

Six others were killed in southern Gaza when a strike hit their tent in Muwasi, according to the hospital.

The Israeli army is yet to comment.

Houthis take responsibility for ballistic missile attack on Israel

The Houthis have taken responsibility for a ballistic missile attack on Israel.

In a statement shared by a spokesperson, it said it had implemented a "military operation targeting a sensitive target of the Zionist enemy".

It claimed this had taken place in the Beer Sheba area, in southern Israel.

Earlier today, see our 8.51 post, we reported on the Israeli army saying it had "most likely successfully intercepted" a missile launched from Yemen.

While the Houthis claimed the operation "successfully achieved its goal," it isn't clear if the missile hit anything or made its target.

Nuclear watchdog: Radiation levels in the Gulf region 'remain normal'

Radiation levels in the Gulf Region "remain normal" following US and Israeli strikes, the nuclear watchdog has said.

Iran's nuclear infrastructure was a key target of Israel's during the 12-day war.

The US struck key nuclear sites last weekend as well, when Donald Trump decided to wade into the conflict.

But in recent comments, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said radiation levels "remain normal".

He cited regional data reported through the International Radiation Monitoring System.

Grossi added: "From a nuclear safety perspective, Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and the Tehran Research Reactor represented our main concern as any strike affecting those facilities 鈥 including their off-site power lines 鈥 could have caused a radiological accident with potential consequences in Iran as well as beyond its borders in the case of the Bushehr plant.

"It did not happen, and the worst nuclear safety scenario was thereby avoided."

Missile launched from Yemen 'most likely' intercepted, Israeli army says

A missile launched from Yemen towards Israel was "most likely successfully intercepted," the Israeli Defence Forces has said.

In a statement, the IDF said: "Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, one missile was launched from Yemen.

"An interceptor was launched toward the missile, and the missile was most likely successfully intercepted."

It isn't clear who fired the missile with the Houthis active in the country.

Israel and the Iran-backed Houthis have been engaged in back-and-forth strikes since the 7 October attacks.

The Houthis have been attacking Israel in what they say is solidarity with Gaza.

But Israel threatens a naval and air blockade if attacks continue.

Over the past the past roughly 20 months, the Houthis, who control most of Yemen, have been firing at Israel and shipping in the Red Sea, disrupting global trade.

Most attacks have fallen short and Israel has carried out retaliatory strikes.

Iran's proxies

But during the 12-day war, the Houthis, along with the rest of Iran's proxies in the region, were largely absent.

Israel has been fighting a war on several fronts since the attack in 2023 that left around 1,200 dead and around 250 taken hostage.

As part of this, it has decapitated Hezbollah and Hamas - both two of Iran's strongest proxies.

Trump claims Gaza ceasefire 'close'

Donald Trump has claimed a Gaza ceasefire is "close".

Taking questions from reporters in the Oval Office late yesterday, the US president said: "We think within the next week we're going to get a ceasefire."

He added: "We're working on Gaza and trying to get it taken care of."

Such an agreement has long been elusive and it's unclear if things will be any different this time.

Focus in the Middle East in recent weeks has shifted to the fighting between Israel and Iran.

However, dire conditions have continued in Gaza, with many struggling.

The distribution of aid has been a flashpoint since Israel supplanted the UN with a US-backed group.

It did this because, it claims, Hamas intercepted the aid, something the UN denies.

Recent weeks have seen repeated fatal incidents around aid trucks and facilities where dozens of Palestinians have been killed by alleged Israeli fire.

In pictures: Thousands mourn in Tehran as dust settles on Israel-Iran fighting

Here are some of the latest pictures from the Middle East.

In Tehran, thousands took to the streets, mourning top military commanders and scientists killed in the 12-day war with Israel.

The caskets of the head of the Revolutionary Guard General Hossein Salami, the head of the guard's ballistic missile programme, General Amir Ali Hajizadeh and others were driven on trucks along the Iranian capital's Azadi Street.

Chants of "death to America" and "death to Israel" could be heard.

There was no immediate sign of the supreme leader in the state broadcast of the funeral.

Over the almost two weeks of fighting, Israel claimed it killed around 30 Iranian commanders and 11 nuclear scientists.

Trump and Iran's war of words

Overnight, Donald Trump and Iran's foreign minister engaged in a bitter war of words.

As the dust settled from 12 days of fighting between Israel and Iran, Trump took issue with claims from Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei, in posts on social media, claimed victory over Israel and criticised the US president.

In response, Trump shared a lengthy post on his social media platform.

We'll sum up some of the key points and share his full message below:

  • Trump said Khamenei's claims were a "lie" and that his nuclear infrastructure was "decimated";
  • He said that he had called back Israeli planes heading for Iran in the week;
  • Trump also said, after the Iranian claims, he had dropped work on sanction relief,
  • And he warned Iran: "It will only get worse".

In response, Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi warned Trump to "put aside the disrespectful and unacceptable tone towards Iran's Supreme Leader".

"The Great and Powerful Iranian People, who showed the world that the Israeli regime had NO CHOICE but to RUN to 'Daddy' to avoid being flattened by our Missiles, do not take kindly to Threats and Insults," he added.

Read his full response below in the latest verbal blows traded between the US and Iran:

For context: Threatening messages back and forth between the two sides are nothing new.

Throughout the fighting, Iran has tried to project strength, despite suffering heavy losses from Israeli attacks.

Similarly, Trump is well-known for his social media tirades and politics-by-posting.
