Russia's overnight attack on Kyiv came hours after Donald Trump said it was a mistake to throw Russia out of what was formerly the G8.

Moscow was removed from the group of industrialised countries in 2014 after Russia invaded and illegally annexed Crimea in 2014.

"This was a big mistake," Trump said, adding he believed Russia would not have invaded Ukraine in 2022 had Vladimir Putin not been ejected from the group.

"Putin speaks to me. He doesn't speak to anybody else... he's not a happy person about it," he added.

"I can tell you that he basically doesn't even speak to the people that threw him out, and I agree with him."

The prime minister of a fictional British government is preparing to deliver an address to the nation after the UK came under armed attack from Russia in the latest episode of The Wargame podcast.

The former Conservative defence secretary is playing the part of the prime minister, leading a team of fellow former top politicians and military and security chiefs in the scenario.

Russia launched 472 drones and missiles at Ukraine during its overnight attacks on the country, Kyiv's air force says.

Of those, 402 out of 442 drones and 26 out of 32 missiles were shot down, it added.

Russia's defence ministry meanwhile said its air defences downed 147 Ukrainian drones, including some over Moscow.

Here are the latest images from Kyiv, where officials say 14 people have been killed by overnight Russian strikes (see 8.27am post).

Britain and its G7 allies are expected to announce further sanctions against Russia today, the government said.

"I want to work with all of our G7 partners to squeeze Russia鈥檚 energy revenues and reduce the funds they are able to pour into their illegal war," Sir Keir Starmer is expected to say.

Britain has already sanctioned over 2,300 individuals, entities and ships as part of sanctions against Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Starmer is expected to deliver a speech, in which he will argue that "Russia doesn't hold all the cards", and will call on allies to "take this moment to increase economic pressure and show President Putin it is in his - and Russia's interests - to demonstrate he is serious about peace".

As we've mentioned, Kyiv came under heavy attack this morning as waves of Russian drones and missiles hit several districts across the capital.

Ukraine's interior minister Ihor Klymenko said 14 people were killed in Kyiv and one more in the southern port city of Odesa.

Volodymyr ZelenAG百家乐在线官网y labelled the attack as "horrific" and "pure terrorism", adding that it's still unclear how many remain trapped under the debris.

Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko said Kyiv was encircled by drones and missiles for almost nine hours.

"Sleep feels like no sleep," she said. "Waking up in utter nightmare: people trapped under rubble and full buildings collapsed."

Officials said that a 62-year-old US citizen was among those killed during the attack.

Ukraine's foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said the timing of strikes on Kyiv was intentional, with world leaders gathered in Canada for a G7 summit this week.

"Putin's goal is very simple: make the G7 leaders appear weak," he says. "Only strong steps and real pressure on Moscow can prove him wrong."

Other parts of the country also came under attack, including Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Kirovohrad and Mykolaiv.

One person died and13 people were injured in the southern region of Odesa, according to local authorities.

Waves of Russia drones and missiles struck districts of Kyiv early this morning, killing 14 people and injuring 44, according to Ukraine's interior minister.

Ihor Klymenko said Moscow "spared neither drones nor missiles" in what he called one of the largest attacks on the capital since Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

In total, Ukraine's air force said it downed 402 drones and 26 missiles overnight.

Russian strikes kill three in Kharkiv

Overnight drone strikes on Ukraine's second-largest city of Kharkiv killed three people and injured dozens more, officials said.

Volodymyr ZelenAG百家乐在线官网y described the attack as "vile", calling on Ukraine's allies to exert more pressure on Moscow for its deadly strikes.

The southern port city of Odesa also came under attack, with drones hitting farm buildings, cars and civilian boats.

It follows successive days of heavy aerial bombardment from Moscow targeting regions across the country.

• Russia returned the bodies of 1,212 Ukrainian soldiers as part of a deal reached during peace talks in Turkey last week;

Ukraine launched a coordinated drone attack, dubbed 'Operation Spider's Web', last week, targeting at least four major Russian air bases and reportedly damaging dozens of aircraft.

Russia's deputy foreign minister claimed that the extent of the damage from the attacks has been "greatly exaggerated" and that none of Moscow's strategic forces were weakened.

"Our nuclear deterrence potential against the US and any other potential adversary has not suffered significant damage," Sergei Ryabkov told Russian state media RIA Novosti.

A Russian opposition politician who described the war in Ukraine as a game of "bloody chess" has been placed under house arrest for two months.

A court in the Russian city of Pskov announced the decision to detain Lev Shlosberg earlier today, after a request from state prosecutors.

Shlosberg will also face other unspecified restrictions, the court said.

The liberal Yabloko party, of which Shlosberg is a senior member, said his arrest was linked to remarks he made about Russia's war in Ukraine.

He was first arrested on Tuesday and charged with discrediting the Russian army after describing the war in Ukraine as a game of "bloody chess", his party added. 

The 61-year-old made the comment in a video debate in January in which he urged an end to the war. 

His party said Shlosberg denies the charge against him.

Shlosberg, one of the relatively few opposition politicians remaining in Russia, faces up to five years in jail if convicted.
