The grieving widow of a pilot and Queen's envoy who died in a helicopter crash has聽described him as "a wonderful man".

Barry Dodd was named by police as the pilot who crashed into a field in Aldborough, North Yorkshire, on Wednesday.

There were no other passengers on board and Mr Dodd, who was Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His widow, Frances Dodd, said he lived his life "according to his values" and that she would "miss him enormously."

Paying tribute to him in a statement, she said: "I am very sad to confirm the news that Barry was tragically killed in a flying accident yesterday.

"Barry was a wonderful man. He lived his life according to his values of honesty and integrity."

Mr Dodd was a successful entrepreneur "especially interested in creating employment in rural areas", according to North Yorkshire Lieutenancy's website.

He created the multinational Global Services and Manufacturing Group, with four manufacturing plants in the UK, among his many achievements.

Mr Dodd also devoted a day a week to unpaid public service in addition to his duties as the Lord-Lieutenant, his biography on the website states.

Mrs Dodd added: "He was intelligent, compassionate and visionary. He enjoyed great business success but just as important to him was his devotion to public service and helping others.

"He was particularly proud to serve as Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire.

"More than anything however, he was a loving family man and I will miss him enormously.

"I will make no further comment and ask that my privacy be respected at this very sad time."

Emergency services were called to a crop field near Aldborough at about 1.20pm on Wednesday and the aircraft was on fire.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said it was investigating.

North Yorkshire Police said Mr Dodd's family was being supported by specially trained officers and requested privacy.
