Baltimore bridge collapse: 1970s structure 'not meant to withstand direct hit', says US transport secretary
The Dali ship ploughed into one of the bridge's supports which led to the collapse of the 1.6-mile-long structure. Mr Buttigieg said the bridge, which was completed in the 1970s, "was simply not made to withstand a direct impact...from a vessel that weighs about 200m pounds".
