Watch: Lava bubbles as volcano erupts in Hawaii
The eruption was confined to the volcano's summit caldera, in a remote area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. According to the Hawaii Volcano Observatory, the most immediate threat could come from volcanic smog that could reach homes downwind.
