A witness who saw the plane crash has said: "I thought it was going to fall in our yard."

"It was scary, but thank God there were no victims among the locals," the resident, who gave her name as Ana Lucia, told the Associated Press.

"It seems that the 62 people inside the plane were the real victims, though."

'Icing' warning in force in area where plane crashed

Flight tracking site Flightradar24 says there's an "icing" warning in effect between 12,000ft and 21,000ft in the area where the aircraft came down.

Icing involves water droplets freezing and collecting on surfaces such as wings and propeller blades. It can hamper an aircraft's performance by reducing thrust, decreasing lift and increasing drag.

It also quotes data from the aircraft indicating a vertical speed of between 8,000 and 24,000ft per minute in its final 60 seconds.
