As the NHS turns 70, Sky News looks back at some of the historic moments to have shaped it.

But with millions of patients being admitted to hospitals across the UK each year, it is inevitable that some will endure less favourable experiences.

Among the stories shared with Sky News over the past week are some which speak to the occasions when the pressure on the NHS tells.

Some of them are featured below:

I鈥檇 like to say the NHS鈥檚 70th anniversary is something worth celebrating, but when it takes 18 days to get a routine appointment, or 11 days to get a doctor capable of doing what needs doing (a bicep injection), you really have to question how far we have come.

A massive amount of incompetence.
Andrea Milne
The NHS should not be used as a political football. It is poorly managed, wasteful and very inefficient in parts. Good staff are fed up that they cannot always give service people deserve.

I am still so traumatised after several inpatient stays that we are now paying to go private. The 'angel' nurses we hear about do exist - but only in tiny numbers. The rest were uncaring, preferring to chat than to work, dirty wards, mistakes by doctors.
Cassandra Martel
I've worked at Southend Hospital for 14 years, I've never known such a crisis around beds and shortage of clinical trained staff.

My story about the NHS. Been failed at every almost every turn. Had to fight tooth and nail for effective treatment. Was lied to repeatedly by a consultant and the complaints procedure was a whitewash. Still battling today, but it鈥檚 soul destroying.

The NHS is a 1947 model. It is no longer fit for purpose.聽Its condition is incurable - it needs to be put out of its misery.聽The politicians and members of the public who insist on keeping it alive are acting like a virus.
Chris George

On the eve of the 70th anniversary, Sky News will address the question as to whether the NHS is still fit for purpose during a special hour-long programme hosted by Dermot Munaghan.

NHS: Fit For the Future? will air from 7pm on Wednesday night, live from Guy's Hospital in central London.
